April is Sports Eye Safety Month

April has been designated as Sports Eye Safety Month by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Most people are aware of the importance of proper eye protection in sports such as hockey or racquetball, and wear face masks or appropriate safety goggles. Unfortunately, many people are injured each year in a variety of other "less dangerous" sports which also require proper eye protection. D'Ambrosio Eye Care wants to remind patients about the importance wearing protective eyewear when participating in team sports. Some facts for each and every patient to consider are:

  • An estimated 40,000 sports eye injuries occur every year. The majority of those being affected by sports eye injuries are children and teenagers, too many of whom suffer permanent visual impairment.

  • For young athletes, baseball and basketball account for the largest number of injuries.

  • Little League pitchers may throw the ball up to 70 mph - fast enough to break bones and do serious damage to the eye.

  • In basketball, you can't prevent contact with flying elbows and fingers, but the serious eye injuries they can cause can be prevented by wearing appropriate protective eyewear.

  • Many other popular sports, such as tennis, soccer, football, golf, water sports and hockey, also put unprotected players at risk for serious eye injury.

Studies have shown that by wearing the right protective eyewear more than 90 percent of eye injuries can be prevented.

  • Specific eyewear is available for just about all activities. We can recommend the appropriate eyewear for your sport.

  • Most protective eyewear, including goggles, face shields and guards should be made of polycarbonate plastic.

  • Protective eyewear must be properly fitted by an eye care professional.

  • Regular street glasses and contacts do not offer enough protection for sports.

It's up to parents to ensure their children wear eye protection when they play sports.

  • Many children's sports leagues, schools and teams don't require children to wear eye protection. Parents should insist that children wear eye protection every time they play and set a good example by wearing eye protection themselves whenever they play.

  • One-eyed athletes need to be especially careful by wearing eye protection at all times during sport and recreational activities.

  • There's no evidence that wearing eye protection hampers athletic performance. Many famous athletes have excelled in their respective sports while wearing protective eyewear.

  • It's a fact! If you play sports, you can get hurt.

Every month should be sports eye safety month, however the American Academy of Ophthalmology has chosen April 2011 to make people aware of it's importance.  Most people are aware of the importance of proper eye protection in sports such as hockey or racquetball and wear face masks or appropriate safety goggles.  Unfortunately, many people are injured each year in a ariety of other "less dangerous" sports which also require proper eye protections.  D'Ambrosio Eye Care wants to remind patients about the importance of wearing protective eyewear when participating in team sports.

"Caps for Good" donation

WOW!  Employees, family and patients at D'Ambrosio Eye Care knitted and crocheted 118 caps to donate to CAPS FOR GOOD.

Great job everyone!
There are going to be a lot of lucky little babies out there receiving them!

By George, it's George Washington's Birthday!

Happy Birthday to President George WashingtonThis is an official federal holiday with government offices and many other institutions and businesses closed.

Our Lancaster office will be open to see patients today, Acton and Gardner are closed.  The Lancaster Optical Department will not be open today, but we'll be glad to see you tomorrow!

Here's a little bit of George Washington trivia for you:  George Washington was born in Virginia on February 11, 1731, according to the then-used Julian calendar. In 1752, however, Britain and all its colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar, which placed Washington's birth on February 22, 1732.

And a little chuckle... One of the provisions of the Monday holiday act changed the observance of Washington's Birthday from February 22nd to the third Monday in February. Ironically, this guaranteed that the holiday would never be celebrated on Washington's actual birthday, as the third Monday in February cannot fall any later than February 21.

Directions for knitting and crocheting are available online at Warm Up America.  We're accepting donations until the end of February.

Winter and Dry Eyes

Dry Eye Syndrome is common in winter because of cold, dry outdoor air and dry indoor heat.  "Symptoms include pain, blurred vision, a scratchy or burning sensation or even watery eyes as the eyes try to compensate for the dryness, explains Francis A. D'Ambrosio, Jr., M.D., Medical Director of D'Ambrosio Eye Care.

JoAnn C. Chang, M.D.
Dry eye can occur at any age, but is more common among older adults, especially post-menopausal women.  In some people, dry eye syndrome may be related to systemic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and collagen vascular diseases such as lupus, certain medications such as diuretics for high blood pressure, antihistamines for allergies and beta blockers for hpertension or heart conditions.

"Simple dry eye may require only some artificial tears and a furnace humidifier or room humidifier.  Today we have treatments for dry eye at include oral doxycycline to improve tear quality, punctal plugs (stoppers inserted into the tear tuct), topical steroids or typical cyclosporine (Restasis)", said D'Ambrosio Eye Care corneal specialist JoAnn C. Chang, M.D.  For most people, dry eye is simply a nuisance, but for some, severe dry eye can make you vulnerable to corneal infections, which can permanently affect your vision.  If you are bothered by dry eyes, please let us know so we can schedule a dry eye examination and consultation.

D'Ambrosio Eye Care flowers to Life Care Center of Leominster

Employees of D'Ambrosio Eye Care, Inc. brought  flowers and smiles to the 133 residents of the Life Care Center of America in Leominster, MA today.

Coordinated with Director of Admissions, Marilyn Mauro, the group had fun handing out the flowers and visting with the residents.

Happy Valentine's Day to all!

Happy Valentine's Day

Enjoy your day, but remember to exercise caution when popping that champagne cork!  Aim the cork away from yourself and others.  Cheers!

Sunday, February 13, 2011

Don't POP That Cork - yet!

If you're opening a bottle of champagne for Valentine's Day, use caution with the cork.  It can become a small missile and can cause an eye injury or more.  Simply twist the cork out while tilton at a 45-degree angle away from yourself and others. As an added benefit, this method saves some of the champagne's sparkle, as well!

Statement on use of 3-D digital products by children

Recently, Nintendo issued a warning about their new 3-D handheld game device that urged parents to prevent children under age 6 years from prolonged viewing of the device's digital images in order to avoid possible damage to visual development.  Other 3-D decive companies have issued similar warnings with their new products.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology provides the following information and recommendations regarding use of 3-D digital products by children and adults.  The Academy's statement is based on accepted medical knowledge and currently available research regarding visual development and function in children and adults.

At this time there are no conclusive studies on the short-and/or long-term effects of 3-D digital products on eye and visual development, health or function in chldren, nor are there persuasive, conclusive theories on how 3-D digital products could cause damage in children with healthy eyes.  The development of normal 3-D vision in children is stimulated as they use their eyes in day-to-day social and natural environments and this development is largely complete by age three years.

Children who have eye conditions such as amylyopia (an imbalance in visual strength between the two eyes), strabismus (misaligned eyes), or other conditions that persistently inhibit focusing, depth perception or normal 3-D vision, would hav e difficulty seeing digital 3-D images.  That does not mean that vision disorders can be caused by 3-D digital products.  However, children (or adults) who have these vision disorders may be more likely to experience headaches and/or eye fatigue when viewing 3-D digital images.

If a healthy child consistently develops headaches or tired eyes, or cannot clearly see the images when using 3-D products, this may indicate a vision or eye disorder.  If such problems occur, the Academy recommends that the child be given a comprehensive exam by an ophthalmologist (and Eye M.D.).

D'Ambrosio Eye Care is pleased to have Oren L. Weisberg, M.D. a pediatric ophthalmologist on it's staff.  Dr. Weisberg sees children to age 18 with eye vision problems.

Dry Eye

When your eye doesn't produce enough tears or tears of the appropriate quality, it can cause dry eye which can be very uncomfortable.

What are some of the symptoms?
    * stinging or burning
    * scratchiness
    * stringy mucus around the eye
    * excessive eye irritation
    * excessive tearing

How is it treated?
Typically with artifical tears - eye drops to lubricate the eye.

Are there ways to prevent or reduce dry eye?
In winter, run a humidifier or place a pan of water on a radiator to increase moisture in your home.
For some people, supplementing your diet with omega-3 fatty acids and flax seeds, are helpful.
Protect yourself when out in the elements, particulary on windy days, with wrap-around glasses.

If these methods don't work, be certain to ask our eye doctors what else might be appropriate for you.

February is ARMD Awareness Month

Sahana Vyas, M.D.

Prevent Blindness America has designated February 2011 as National Age Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month.  Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) is the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in Americans older than 50 and affects more than two million people. Although ARMD is incurable, there are new treatments than can, at a minimum, prevent further vision loss from the disease and in many cases actually help recover lost vision.

ARMD causes central vision to blur, but leaves peripheral vision intact.  It is progressive and painless.  There are two types of ARMD:  dry and wet.  Aoorixunatekt 90% of people with ARMD have the dry form which results in gradual vision loss.  Although only 10% of people with ARMD have the wet form, it generally progresses much quicker than the dry form.  Wet AMD is characterized by the growth of abnormal retinal blood vessels that leak blood or bluid, causing rapid and severe central vision loss.

Patients can help reduce the risk of developing ARMD by not smoking and working to eat a heart-healthy diet rich in fish, fruit and green leafy vegetables, avoiding food with trans fats, exercising and controlling blood pressure and weight.

We are fortunate to be able to offer Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) drugs that inhibit the development of unwanted blood vessels that cause wet ARMD as these agents are effective in helping to prevent further visual loss and even improve vision.

Patients older than 50 are encouraged to have a comprehensive, dilated eye examination every one to two years to ensure that ARMD is deceted and treated early.  The key to successful treatment is early detection and intervention.  We are fortunate to have Sahana Vyas, M.D. at D'Ambrosio Eye Care in Lancaster, Acton and Gardner, Massachusetts who is fellowship-trained in Diseases & Surgery of the Retina and a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of Macular Degeneration.

Post Ops in Lancaster

Patients from yesterday's LASIK, PRK and PTK, performed by JoAnn C. Chang, M.D., were seen in our Lancaster office today.

How is glaucoma detected?

The best way to detect glaucoma is to have regular eye examinations.  As part of a complete eye exam, you eye doctor will check the intraocular pressure of your eye.  It is important that you inform the technicians and doctor of any family history of glaucoma.

Bin (Benjamin) Wu, M.D. is our glaucoma specialist and treats patients in all three of our offices.

LASIK, PRK, PTK in Lancaster this morning

JoAnn C. Chang, M.D. was busy in our Lancaster surgical suite with procedures this morning.  She performed LASIK, PRK and PTK

As usual, Andrea, our LASIK Coordinator, made wonderful treats for our patients and guests, today was peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies!

In addition to her cookies, Andrea treats every patient to a healthy dose of TLC!

Eat your fruit for eye health!

Did you know that eating berries, plums, oranges and cherries can help maintain better eye health?  By eathing these fruits, the antioxidants combat environmental factors, such as pollution and sunlight, which can quicken the hardening of the natural lenses in the eye which contributes to cataracts and macular degeneration.

Go Green!

Collard Greens
Green, leafy vegetables, that is!
Eating two servings a day of dark, leafy green such as kale, collard greens and spinach has been shown to reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts.  See, your Mother was right about eating your vegetables!

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve - the part of the eye that is responsible for carrying the images we see to the brain.  It's made of nerve fibers and when damage occurs, blind spots develop.  Often these blind spots may go undetected until the damage is significant, so early detection and treatment is important.  We are fortunate to have Bin (Benjamin) Wu, M.D., a fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist working at D'Ambrosio Eye Care.

Benjamin Wu, M.D.

Dr. Wu specializes in diseases and surgery of the anterior segment of the eye, glaucoma, cataract and Intraocular Lens Implantation (IOL) in his patients.

Appointments may be scheduled with Dr. Wu at all three of our offices in Lancaster, Gardner and Acton, Massachusetts.
