Eyewear for Memorial Day Just Around the Corner!
D’Ambrosio Eye Care wants to remind you it’s important to wear UV-blocking sunglasses and a brimmed hat or cap to additionally protect the sensitive areas around your eyes. This isn’t just for the adults; children should also be monitored for protection, too.

Lasik Evaluation Expectations
“When we see our patients for LASIK evaluations we are sure to be as thorough as possible,” said D’Ambrosio Eye Care Corneal Specialist and LASIK Surgeon JoAnn C. Chang, M.D.
Your LASIK consultation should consist of a number of clinical tests including:
>Measurement of your uncorrected visual acuity
>Measurement of your visual acuity with your current eyeglasses or contact lenses
>Optical measurement of the current prescription that you are wearing in your eyeglasses and/or a review of your current contact lens prescription
>A thorough review of your medical and eye history, including all prescription and non-prescription medication that you have been or are currently taking
>A refraction-automated or manual-to determine your current prescription
>A topography measurement to digitally map the shape of your cornea
>A pachymetry measurement of the thickness of your cornea
>A measurement of pupil size
>A microscopic evaluation of the health of your cornea and tear film, including testing for dry eyes.
“From this testing, it can be determined whether you should proceed to the final level of testing whereby the actual preoperative measurements are taken for your treatment and a thorough examination of the retina and optic nerve can be performed,” said Dr. Chang.
In addition to the actual clinical testing, your LASIK evaluation will include a full discussion of LASIK risks, benefits and complications and a thorough analysis of the personal goals and objectives that you feel are important to your success. The best way for you or someone you know to find out if they are a candidate for LASIK is to schedule an evaluation for LASIK at D’Ambrosio Eye Care by calling 800-325-3937.

Childrens’ Eyeglass Painless Growth Program
D’Ambrosio Eye Care is proud to offer a special “Parent’s Painless Growth Program” in our Optical Departments to assist the parents of children who wear eyeglasses. Program Details:
Throughout your child’s life their vision is growing and changing, much like the size of their clothes or shoes. For many children, their prescription can change more than once each year until their eyes are fully developed. In cases like this, D’Ambrosio Eye Care recognizes that purchasing a new pair of lenses with each change could become costly to parents, so we offer your child free lens changes for these premature changes that happen earlier than routine eye examinations (up to age 18).
All you need to do is be sure that one of our highly-qualified doctors continues to care for your child’s eyes. If we decide that your child's eyes are outgrowing their lenses, we will change them for FREE!
Please ask any of our Opticians or Optical Department Staff for more information.

Who Is A Good Lasik Candidate?
Dr. Chang has relayed the following guidelines for patients to consider regarding who is a good candidate for LASIK surgery:
- The great majority of patients who are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism are potential candidates for LASIK.
- Good LASIK candidates are at least 18 years of age or older and have stable vision. This means that their eyeglass or contact lens prescription has not changed much in the last year or so. Many people do not have "stable" vision until 21 years of age, however so each person is a bit different.
- Good LASIK candidates have healthy eyes that are free from retinal problems, corneal scars, and any other eye diseases. They have normal corneal shapes and thickness as well as healthy tears.
- The best LASIK candidates are those with a lifestyle, activities or occupation in which they are dissatisfied with their contact lenses or glasses.
The best way for you or someone you know to find out if they are a good candidate for LASIK is to have an evaluation, examination and consultation at D’Ambrosio Eye Care. Please feel free to phone D’Ambrosio Eye Care Toll Free at 800-325-3937 to schedule a consultation and examination.

Ultraviolet (UV) Eye Protection Awareness Month
Today almost everyone is aware of the potential damage that sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause to their skin, most do not know or appreciate that ultraviolet light (UV) can also cause significant damage to eye health and vision.
“Most of us wouldn’t dream of staying outside in the sun without putting on sunscreen lotion,” said Francis D’Ambrosio, Jr., M.D., Medical Director of D’Ambrosio Eye Care. “But we also need to remember to wear both UV-blocking sunglasses and a brimmed hat to protect our eyes as well.”
Patients are fortunate to have wide range of UV protecting eyeglass lenses available to choose from. Eye protection from UV needs to be complete but doesn’t have to be overly expensive. High quality sunglasses should block out 99-100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. It is also important to have UV protection in everyday eyewear, which is readily available with a number of UV blocking eyeglass lens materials, specialized coatings and photochromic lenses.
“We know that extended exposure to UV has been linked to many eye problems, conditions and in some cases thought to quicken the onset of eye diseases such as Cataract, Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), certain cancers on the delicate skin around the eye, Pterygia-a growth of white tissue on the surface of the eye-and even Photokeratitis, a type of sunburn of the cornea”, said JoAnn C. Chang, M.D., a Corneal Specialist at D’Ambrosio Eye Care.
When you visit D’Ambrosio Eye Care, please feel free to ask any questions you might have about UV protection, eye disease and the best way to protect your eyes with the proper eyewear and lens choices. D’Ambrosio Eye Care can be reached at 800-325-3937 to help answer questions.

Eye Health Vitamins: MacularProtect Plus
MacularProtect Plus is a powerful nutritional formulation developed to help preserve your macular health. Based on the most advanced scientific research, MacularProtect Plus delivers a robust combination of antioxidants and minerals including lutein; vitamins A, C and E; zinc; copper and selenium – key nutrients found to play a significant role in eye health.
The Science Behind MacularProtect Plus
MacularProtect Plus is based on the findings of the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), a clinical trial supported by the National Eye Institute, and also embraces other advanced science. The long-term AREDS clinical trial showed that patients taking supplementary antioxidants combined with zinc had a better chance of retaining their macular health and vision than those who received only zinc, antioxidants alone, or a placebo.
MacularProtect Plus is an appropriate choice for smokers and non-smokers alike.

April is Sports Eye Safety Month
- An estimated 40,000 sports eye injuries occur every year. The majority of those being affected by sports eye injuries are children and teenagers, too many of whom suffer permanent visual impairment.
- For young athletes, baseball and basketball account for the largest number of injuries.
- Little League pitchers may throw the ball up to 70 mph - fast enough to break bones and do serious damage to the eye.
- In basketball, you can't prevent contact with flying elbows and fingers, but the serious eye injuries they can cause can be prevented by wearing appropriate protective eyewear.
- Many other popular sports, such as tennis, soccer, football, golf, water sports and hockey, also put unprotected players at risk for serious eye injury.
- Specific eyewear is available for just about all activities. We can recommend the appropriate eyewear for your sport.
- Most protective eyewear, including goggles, face shields and guards should be made of polycarbonate plastic.
- Protective eyewear must be properly fitted by an eye care professional.
- Regular street glasses and contacts do not offer enough protection for sports.
- Many children's sports leagues, schools and teams don't require children to wear eye protection. Parents should insist that children wear eye protection every time they play and set a good example by wearing eye protection themselves whenever they play.
- One-eyed athletes need to be especially careful by wearing eye protection at all times during sport and recreational activities.
- There's no evidence that wearing eye protection hampers athletic performance. Many famous athletes have excelled in their respective sports while wearing protective eyewear.
- It's a fact! If you play sports, you can get hurt.
