Tear Film Evaluation

During a comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor will evaluate your tear film.  A proper tear film is very important for vision, comfort, and ocular health.  Evaluating the tear film is usually done by instilling an orange fluorescein dye in the tear film.  When visualized with a blue light, the tear film lights up.

As we age, we may produce less tears and this can result in a thin tear film.  Eyelid inflammation, or blepharitis, can affect the tear composition and lead to an unstable tear film.  Quick tear film evaporation can lead to desiccation of the cornea and conjunctiva which can lead to symptoms of burning, grittiness and blur. Proper eyelid position is also important to ensure proper tear flow.  The tear ducts, or puncta, are located at the inner corners of the upper and lower eyelid margins.  Proper alignment of the tear ducts is important for proper tear flow away from the eye. Environmental factors such as air conditioning and heating vents, or windy conditions can increase dryness symptoms.  Increased computer and cell phone use also can make dry eye symptoms worse.  Luckily, many effective treatments are now available to treat dry eye syndrome.

If your eyes feel dry, ask your eye doctor what treatments are best for you. You can contact D’Ambrosio Eye Care at 800-325-3937 for more information or to schedule an eye examination or you may also request an appointment at facebook.com/dambrosioeyecare.

Caring for Eyewear & Eyeglasses

Massachusetts Optician Jocelyn Mylott of D’Ambrosio Eye Care shared information about caring for eyewear and eyeglasses. “Caring for your eyewear is something that most people need to know about. Whenever you have purchased eyewear you need to be sure to properly care for them and this is our “how-to,” said Ms. Mylott.

Cleaning Eyewear
$ Never wipe eyewear dry to prevent scratching
$ Spray lenses using lens cleaner or run them under warm soapy water
$ Wipe dry with provided (washable) micro fiber cleaning cloth or a non-oily/lotion tissue, not paper towel
$ You should try adding cleaning your eyewear to your morning routine
$ Avoid exposure to products such as hairspray

Caring for Eyewear
$ Never expose to extreme heat such as dashboards, showers and saunas
$ Never place eyewear lenses down to prevent scratching
$ When not in use store in provided eyewear case to prevent scratching, crushing from sitting or pet damage, causing your eyewear to need an adjustment
$ Remove and put on eyewear using 2 hands to prevent damage to hinges and lens, especially for rimless frames which could develop stress cracking around the hinge, if not handled appropriately
$ Never leave eyewear on top of your head to prevent damage to the hinges and lenses. This may also require the frame to need an adjustment.

Repair of Eyewear
$ Always bring eyewear to an eyewear professional for repair and nose pad replacement. Home repair could cause loss of warranty and further damage.
$ If eyewear needs adjustment you should never attempt this yourself. This may cause damage to the frame and lens and it will not be properly adjusted, this is especially important for progressive lens wearers’.

We suggest quarterly “tune-ups”.  For eyewear purchased at D’Ambrosio Eye Care feel free to stop by any of our locations for a complimentary adjustment and repair, if needed.  See you then!

Please call 800-325-3937, D’Ambrosio Eye Care, if you have any questions. You may also request an appointment at facebook.com/dambrosioeyecare.

Progressive Lenses: Wish You Could See Your Feet?

Ever wish you could see your feet when stepping off the curb when you wear progressive lenses? Without having to bend your head down to see them. You can. D’Ambrosio Eye Care offers a lens design that offers all the ranges of vision that an ordinary progressive lens offers but then also adds a 4th zone of intermediate vision on the bottom portion of the lens called, “ground view advantage”. This lens is called the Essilor Definity lens.

The ability to see clearly when looking down has been linked to an increased risk of slips and falls. This ground view improves the way patients see when they are going up and down stairs, walking on uneven surfaces, or stepping off a curb. In a double-blind golf clinical study golfers preferred this lenses 7:1, why wouldn’t you want better vision to improve your game?
For questions on these, or any other optical product, please stop by one of our locations and speak with our licensed opticians or call us at 800-325-3937. You may also request an appointment at facebook.com/dambrosioeyecare.

LATISSE™ is an FDA approved treatment that can help you grow fuller, longer lashes. Most people who are interested in their appearance know the value of having big, bright, beautiful eyes. While eye makeup alone may be able to help you achieve a fuller and longer look for your eyelashes, LATISSE™ can actually help you grow fuller, longer eyelashes on your own! Your lashes are a big part of making your eyes more visible and adding that bright beautiful look to your appearance.

Lash enhancers have been used since ancient times to brighten the look of eyes. Today there are numerous eyelash cosmetics and treatments available to help you look your best. An option for those who want to fully benefit from these treatments is to make the most of their own natural lashes by enhancing their growth so that they are actually longer, fuller and darker.

LATISSE™ is a solution intended for use on the upper eyelid margins or the base of the eyelashes. It is a solution we can prescribe after an initial examination and consultation so that it can be determined if LATISSE™ is a good choice for you. It is important to follow your physician's instructions for LATISSE™ use. You should make your physician aware of any side effects that may occur in a small number of patients so that they can be addressed. These can include itching and redness of the eye itself, eye irritation, darkening of the skin around the eye, dryness or redness of the skin around the eye. Make sure that you keep the appointments for follow-up visits with your physician so that they can be sure you are getting the results you desire and not experiencing any of the side effects mentioned.

LATISSE™ is available from many physicians. As Ophthalmologists we are eye physicians and surgeons who are specialists in understanding your eyes and the delicate tissue around your eyes including your lashes, eyelid margins, and eyelids. We are specifically trained and experienced in the examination and treatment of these areas for your eye health and cosmetic appearance, and we are here to help you look your best!

Diabetic Retinopathy Exams

Diabetic Retinopathy exams are extremely important as patients with diabetes develop changes in the blood vessels throughout the body, causing poor circulation. This is reflected in the eyes, specifically in the retina and in the retinal blood vessels. It is important that diabetics have a dilated eye exam at least once a year to look for abnormalities of the retina.

This is called diabetic retinopathy. Patients who have been diagnosed with diabetes will need to be seen more often if they are starting to show diabetic changes in the retina. There are varying degrees of diabetic retinopathy. We use a combination of the dilated eye exam, OCT testing and dye tests to determine if a patient needs treatment. Modern treatments are aimed at trying to preserve good vision. Treatment methods that your Ophthalmologist may use include laser, injections and surgery. Preserving good vision and a healthy lifestyle requires early detection and early treatment.

If you or someone you know have been diagnosed with diabetes and need an eye examination, contact D’Ambrosio Eye Care at 800-325-3937 to schedule an appointment. You may also request an appointment at facebook.com/dambrosioeyecare or visiting D’Ambrosio Eye Care.
