Researchers reporting in the Eye & Contact Lens: Science & Clinical Practice demonstrated that both rigid and soft contact lenses negatively impacted the tear film surface quality. Boston Eye Doctor on Contact Lens Tips for Healthy Vision

Boston eye doctor Dr. Michael Fu shared some tips for wearing contact lenses and maintaining healthy vision. “We remind patients that contact lenses are a medical device and even those worn purely for cosmetic purposes, should be prescribed and properly fit by a licensed eye care professional," explained Dr. Fu. "Too many patients forget this and end up buying and wearing contact lenses without proper medical guidance and a valid prescription. Then, often without even realizing it, they put themselves at risk for serious, even blinding eye infections."

Following the instructions given to you by your eye doctor-carefully and completely can go a long way to help avoid contact lens problems and complications. "Our experience clearly shows that by not following instructions on proper wear and care, contact lens wearers are more likely to have discomfort and may actually put themselves at greater risk for infection or other serious complications, such as microbial keratitis," said Dr. Fu. “We often find that improper storage, handling and disinfection of contact lenses really predispose patients to unnecessary risk.”

Some good contact lens care, handling and disinfection tips to follow include:

Ø  Always wash your hands with soap before inserting or removing your contact lenses.

Ø  Always empty the storage case of disinfection solution after removing your lenses, and fully refill with fresh solution before storing them.

Ø  NEVER clean your case with tap water.

Ø  REGULARLY-even daily- clean your case.

Ø  REGULARLY-at least monthly- replace your case.

Contact Lens Wearers and Non Compliance

Recent results from two on-line surveys sponsored by VISTAKON®, Division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. indicate contact lens wearers are significantly non-compliant in many areas of contact lens wear and care. One survey addressed the frequency of lens replacement and the other posed questions regarding disinfection of the lenses, hygiene and the storage case replacement.

JoAnn C. Chang, M.D., Corneal Specialist at D’Ambrosio Eye Care, Inc. was not surprised by the results of these surveys. Dr. Chang states “the cornea is the window of the eyes, it must remain clean and clear for optimal vision.” Recently, Dr. Chang saw a young woman in the Lancaster office of D’Ambrosio Eye Care from over-wearing contact lenses. While Dr. Chang was able to save her patient’s eye, unfortunately this young woman has lost a significant portion of her vision in one eye. The contact lens was left in place too long and managed to mask the abrasion on her cornea and became a bacterial breading ground. The infection spread into her eye. “It is critical for contact lens patients to remove their lenses as directed by their eye care professional and to maintain proper hygiene and replaces lenses when instructed to attain good eye health” according to Dr. Chang.

 A big welcome to our newest Optometrist, Khyla Lance, O.D.
 
Dr. Lance earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Claflin University in 2004.  Following her undergraduate education, she relocated to Ohio where she earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from The Ohio State University College of Optometry in 2008.  Following that, Dr. Lance completed a residency in Ocular Disease at Omni Eye Serviced of New Jersey / New York in 2009 where she provided a range of services including pre- and post-op refractive surgery co-management, glaucoma co-management, ocular health examinations for retinal conditions including diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration and emergency care.  Following her residency, Dr. Lance returned to Columbus, Ohio where she provided primary eye care examinations and contact lens fitting for patients of all ages at a local practice.

Dr. Lance is a member of the American Optometric Association.

Dr. Lance sees patients for general eye examinations, contact lens examinations and fittings, and eye health and vision examinations.
