Lens Implant Patient Story

My story is about having Lens Implants. I am providing my comments concerning my Lens Implant surgeries because it was a really good experience.
  • Surgery was performed on each of my eyes two weeks apart.
  • Prior to my surgeries, I did not have vision in one eye and limited vision in the other eye. Additionally, it was not safe for me to drive and I could not pass a driver license vision test.
  • Though I had had two serious surgeries in the past, I was very concerned about having surgery performed on my eyes.
  • What I learned was Lens Implant surgery is a “piece of cake”. You are aware of what’s going on; there is not any pain during or after the surgery and the surgery is approximately ten to fifteen minutes long and shortly thereafter you are on your way home.
  • Due to the surgeries, I can now see out of both eyes, can safely drive and have passed a driver license vision test. Also, the only glasses I need now are reading glasses.
  • Dr. D’Ambrosio and his entire staff are professional, courteous and make you feel at ease at all times.
Put your eyes in Dr. D’Ambrosio’s skilled hands and don’t worry as he and his staff are the best of the best.

Boston Surgeon on Waiting for Cataract Surgery

Boston Cataract Surgeon Francis D’Ambrosio, Jr., M.D., shared thoughts about waiting too long to have cataract surgery and lens implants. “The decision of when to have a cataract removed and replaced with lens implants is really a very personal decision,” said Dr. D’Ambrosio, Jr. “Some patients are simply not comfortable with the slightest degree of blurry vision or glare sensitivity, whereas others surprise me with how tolerant they are. So, I generally tell patients that their cataracts should be removed when they feel that they have visual discomfort or inconvenience-or any safety issues with navigating each day’s activities with confidence,” Dr. D’Ambrosio, Jr. of D’Ambrosio Eye Care with offices in Athol, Lancaster, Acton & Gardner, Massachusetts explained.

What patients should know though is that waiting too long for cataract surgery can result is some unintended consequences and possible risks. “For example, as a cataract matures, it does become denser and somewhat more difficult to remove. This requires more energy and may lead to prolonged inflammation or even intraoperative complications,” stated Dr. D’Ambrosio, Jr. “For certain we don’t want the cataract to become so dense, swollen and cloudy that it causes a type of glaucoma or impair our view of the retina,” Dr. D’Ambrosio, Jr. stressed. “In these instances your cataract surgeon is likely to recommend proceeding with cataract removal even though you may not think you are quite ready.”

LASIK, Motorcycle Riding & Dry Eye in Massachusetts

“What do LASIK, motorcycle riding and dry eyes have in common you wonder?” asked Massachusetts LASIK Surgeon Francis D’Ambrosio, Jr., M.D. of D’Ambrosio Eye Care with offices in Athol, Lancaster, Acton & Gardner. “This is the time of year we start to see many motorcycle riders who are interested in LASIK,” commented Dr. D’Ambrosio, Jr. “Contact lenses and certainly eyeglasses can be a real challenge for motorcycle riders-so many consider LASIK about now. As motorcycle lovers start to think about the spring and summer motorcycle riding season, I try to remind them that eye safety and also dry eyes should top the list of things they think about as part of their readiness checklists along with the condition of their gear and bikes,” Dr. D’Ambrosio, Jr. further explained.

It is important to recognize the need for eye protection from the sun, bugs, small rocks and pebbles and especially the wind, which can really contribute to dry eye symptoms. LASIK patients as well as other recreational motorcycle riders sometimes overlook or are just not aware of the potential for eye irritation and motorcycle dry eye caused by the wind, exhaust fumes, pollen and pollution-as well as the summer sun and heat.

At your LASIK consultation the staff will be exploring your lifestyle needs and activities. As a potential LASIK patient we want to take the time necessary so that we can carefully counsel you in order to get the best results and help meet your expectations. Please take the time to tell us about your motorcycle riding interest as well as all of the ways in which you are hoping to benefit from LASIK.

Patient Story of Calm LASIK

From the moment I walked in the door for my consultation with D'Ambrosio Eye Care, the staff was extremely kind and helpful. They were sure to answer all my questions in ways I could understand so I always felt like I knew exactly what was going on. When the day of the surgery came around, the doctor was calm and confident which greatly helped to settle my nerves. Between my understanding of the procedure and the doctor’s soothing narration to me through the operation, I felt completely confident in my outcome and my nerves fell away. And the best part of it all was sitting up and immediately being able to read the clock on the far wall. Prior to LASIK, I couldn't read anything farther than a foot from my face; now I have 20/15 vision and I'm still surprised at what I can see across a room. LASIK was one of the best decisions I've ever made and I'm extremely glad I chose D'Ambrosio Eye Care to do it.

Cataract Lens Implants for Astigmatism

Massachusetts Cataract Surgeon Francis D’Ambrosio, Jr., M.D. commented on correcting astigmatism after cataract surgery with toric lens implants. “Most cataract patients know from their eye exams or eyeglass prescriptions that they have some amount of astigmatism. However, sometimes they don’t realize that it is important for their cataract surgeon to correct that astigmatism in order to get the best visual results after cataract surgery,” explained Dr. D’Ambrosio of D’Ambrosio Eye Care with offices in Athol, Lancaster, Acton & Gardner.

Astigmatism is a common refractive eye condition that that is most often due to an uneven curvature of the cornea. If the cornea were perfectly shaped, it would have a spherical round even shape, like a basketball. In eyes that have astigmatism, the cornea is typically curved more like an oblong, football-like shape, similar to the shape of the back of a teaspoon. “Depending on the degree and orientation of the unequal curvatures, astigmatism can cause mild or even severe blurry vision,” explained Dr. D’Ambrosio.

Patients with cataracts and who are in need of cataract surgery have three choices when considering how to correct their astigmatism.

First, patients can simply choose to be dependent on wearing eyeglasses after cataract surgery in order to correct astigmatism.

Second, if appropriate, some patients may opt to have an additional surgical procedure called Limbal Relaxing Incisions (LRI) or third, patients can elect have an astigmatism correcting toric lens implant in which the astigmatism correction is incorporated into the lens prescription just as in eyeglasses. “Toric lens implants are placed in the eye in exactly the same manner as ordinary lens implants at the time of cataract surgery and correct the astigmatism as part of the cataract surgery operation,” further explained Dr. D’Ambrosio.

If you or someone you know has cataracts or is considering cataract surgery and has astigmatism please feel free to schedule an eye examination at D’Ambrosio Eye Care by calling us at 800-325-3937, visiting D’Ambrosio Eye Care or facebook.com/dambrosioeyecare so that we can help recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
